Merritt Island

If had not been for a facebook connection of Jim and his Air Force roommate, Steve “Goldie” Goldsmith from Alaska forty years ago, we would not have found this gem of a wildlife destination. While in Florida, Jim arranged to visit with Goldie and his delightful wife Mickie. Knowing we like photography, they suggested we visit Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.  Mickie is also an accomplished photographer, and she knew exaclty where to go to get great bird photography.

We had seen some roseate spoonbills from afar in Shark valley, but we were in for quite a treat at Merritt Island.  The pink colored birds were glowing a bright coral red-pink as the warm sun was setting, and we were treated to wonderful red reflections in the water as they waded and fished for dinner.

A perfect ending to a wonderful trip.
