A series of carriage roads provide for beautiful and safe biking through Acadia National Park. John D. Rockefeller Jr not only donated much of the land that is now Acadia, he also conceived a system of roads for horse-drawn carriages to take people through the park. These roads delightfully meander through fifty-one miles of woods, and include sixteen beautiful stone bridges. Still used by horse-drawn carriages, these roads are closed to automobiles, so biking can be enjoyed without worry of traffic. And if you are too tired to bike back, the Island Explorer shuttle bus (during summer season) will pick you and your bike up for a ride back.
