Devils Tower

We traveled into Wyoming to the site of a surreal geologic enormity – Devils Tower. Formed by molten magma that cooled underground, the softer rock surrounding it eroded over millions of years to leave the tower exposed.

The Kiowa legend about a brother and seven sisters relates that the brother became a bear and chased his sisters up a big tree.  The bear scored the bark with his claws and the seven sisters reached the top of the tree where they were born into the sky to become the stars of the Big Dipper.

Today the tower is a popular challenge for climbers.  Approximately 5,000 climbers come every year from all over the world to climb on the massive columns. More than 220 routes have been used to make the ascent.
